Ecological trends in logistics – a new dimension of e-commerce

Glass-safe e-commerce shipments – plastic-free: is it possible? Definitely yes! In recent years, customer awareness of environmental protection has grown to such an extent that companies and manufacturers are actively seeking solutions that align with their commitment to sustainability and innovation in product packaging.

A pioneer in the Polish market in this field, utilizing 100% eco-friendly shipment protection, is Trend Glass, a glassworks specializing in household glass production.

The challenge – delivering an eco-friendly solution for e-commerce

The goal was to develop an efficient and safe process for packing, assembling, and shipping delicate glass products. Every packaging component—from the box to the tape and fillers—had to be made from recycled, recyclable, or biodegradable materials.

To fully meet the client’s high requirements, the combined teams of Trend Glass and Rohlig Suus Logistics spent just eight months researching the ecological packaging market, selecting and testing available packaging for shipment safety, and setting up the entire service process. This included integrating the client’s online store with the warehouse management system to handle one of the most fragile materials—glass.

At Trend Glass’s initiative, custom molds and innovative protective inserts were developed, specially designed to fit the packaging dimensions.

We are constantly improving our processes to minimize our environmental impact—reducing energy consumption, managing exhaust emissions, electricity, water, and raw materials, and focusing on renewable energy sources. Our transport packaging, consisting of cardboard and protective inserts, is a great example of this commitment. Made from the most eco-friendly material—cellulose pulp derived from recycled cardboard and paper—its production is free of chemicals and plastics. Our packaging is FSC-certified, proving that the materials come from responsibly managed forests. We have been committed to ecological solutions for years and see that more and more of our customers share this responsibility. In this case, the biggest challenge was finding a safe and sustainable way to transport glass, says Artur Malarski, Director of Contract Logistics at Rohlig Suus Logistics. This is our first large-scale project where we sought fully ecological solutions using recycled and biodegradable materials. We successfully achieved both goals, and we are proud of it. This proves that business can be run with environmental responsibility in mind.

This year, Rohlig Suus Logistics published its first ESG report, enabling clients to calculate their carbon footprint and offering alternative transport and logistics solutions to minimize emissions. The company has long prioritized building warehouses to the highest ecological standards. When selecting new facilities, it focuses on optimizing space and natural light usage. Currently, 12 out of 26 Rohlig Suus Logistics facilities hold BREEAM certification. The company is gradually replacing older warehouses with modern, eco-certified properties in the same locations. All new facilities already include photovoltaic panels, skylights, intelligent lighting control systems, flower meadows, and electric vehicle charging stations.
