Behind the scenes of a challenging transport: three giant exchangers devilery

Case study

Heavy cargo, tight underpasses, last-minute route changes if neccesery– transporting three exchangers from Pardubice to Liberec was anything but a routine operation. Rohlig SUUS Logistics team carried out six domestic oversized transports that tested not only our preparedness, but also our real-time adaptability.

The challenge: non-standard dimensions

Each exchanger weighed 55 tons, measured 4.5 meters in diameter, and reached a total height of over 5 meters when loaded. Due to these dimensions, we had to adjust not only the mounts, but also the route and timing.

Our solution: from the factory to the final Destination

Unusual handling – The units were loaded directly inside the production hall in Pardubice with no option for direct vehicle access. Trucks had to reverse into position, and the exchangers were lifted at a tight angle using two gantry cranes. The entire operation required centimeter-level precision.

Custom mounts – The originally proposed wooden mounts were not suitable. While steel mounts could bear the weight, they exceeded the height limits. In collaboration with the carrier, we developed and delivered a fully customized solution tailored to this transport.

Special route planning – The initial route had to be completely redesigned due to road closures and a raised railway crossing. We quickly prepared a new variant that passed through risk areas such as bridges and low overhead power lines.

Transport execution: accuracy and night mode

All transports took place at night to minimize impact on regular traffic. Critical segments were monitored by support teams, and in some areas, we operated just centimeters from clearance limits. The destination offered limited maneuvering space, but thanks to the expertise of our crane operators and technicians, the entire handover was completed without a single incident.

Client Benefits

The project demonstrated our ability to manage complex transports from A to Z – from technical solution design to final delivery. We handled not just the transport itself, but also the design and production of custom components. The client could rely on a single, dedicated team responsible for every stage of the process. Projects like this require high flexibility due to ever-changing conditions, along with thorough expert consultations and close communication among all involved parties.
